Soccer Friday - Miller on Women’s World Cup Stats, Facts, Props and Odds

Sean Miller

The Women's World Cup starts Friday, and there is a lot of proposition action on offer.

Of course, much of the hype coming in is around the host team France, which is the co-favorite with the defending champion United States. The American side crushed Japan, 5-2, in the 2015 final, avenging a heartbreaking loss in the 2011 final.

Here are some tournament facts to know:

>>> The host team has only won the tournament one time: in 1999, when the USA won its second title in three tournaments.

>>> This is the third tournament hosted by a European country. The first one (1995, Sweden) saw two European teams battle for the title, with Norway knocking off Germany 2-0. The latest one (2011, Germany) was the win for Japan over the USA, 2-2 (3-1 on penalties).

>>> No country has ever held both the men's and women's World Cup title at the same time. France has a chance to do just that.

>>> If both the USA and France win their groups, the two tournament favorites would meet in an epic quarterfinal match at the Parc de Princes in Paris on June 28.

>>> Only six nations have reached a final in the first seven tournaments.

>>> The USA has been to four finals, and has won three (1991, 1999, 2015).

>>> Germany has been to three finals, and won two (2003, 2007).

>>> Japan has been to two finals, and won one (2011).

>>> Norway has been to two finals, and won one (1995).

>>> Brazil and China have each been to one final.
