NHL Sunday: Devils Heading into a Storm

Also Islanders-Wild, Flyers-Penguins

Craig Dietel

DEVILS (+200) at AVALANCHE (-260), 3 p.m.
Pick: Avalanche (-260)

The Devils (27-36-9) are coming off of an impressive win against the Canucks that went seven rounds in a shootout. D Damon Severson managed to seal the deal for New Jersey with a nifty move. The Devils will be going for their first three-game winning streak of 2019.

The Avalanche (30-29-12) are still without F Gabriel Landeskog which was a huge loss for them down the stretch. Without him they’ve plummeted down the standings after starting off so hot. They are 2-5-0 in their last seven and have dropped their last pair. They will look to get back into the swing of things against New Jersey. Look for F Nathan MacKinnon and F Mikko Rantanen to have a day against the Devils here.

ISLANDERS (+100) at WILD (-120), 6 p.m.
Pick: Islanders (+100)

Both the Islanders (41-23-7) and the Wild (34-30-8) are coming off Saturday games. The Wild smothered the Rangers, 5-2, to keep themselves in playoff contention. The Isles dropped a game they should’ve easily won to the Red Wings, 2-1. We think that New York will come out ready to work to make up for that loss. They will be mad for dropping such an easy matchup and the Wild will pay the price for it.

Good news for the Islanders is that the Capitals didn’t gain any ground either and the Caps are idle Sunday. This is a huge one for New York, they need to snuff out the Wild and forge onward for the top spot in the Metror.

FLYERS (+140) at PENGUINS (-160), 7:30 p.m.
Pick: Penguins (-160)

The Battle for Pennsylvania rages onward as the Flyers (34-29-8) will try to take down the Penguins (39-24-9) in Pittsburgh.

Last time we saw these teams on the same ice, the Penguins blew a 3-1 lead in the Stadium Series game at the Linc. That definitely doesn’t sit well with the Penguins locker room. They surely won’t let something like that happen again.

The Penguins are 7-2-2 in their last 11 but the Flyers have dropped two in a row and have been all but mathematically eliminated from postseason contention. It sure looks like a layup for the Penguins, but all the Flyers have left is trying spoil other teams’ stretch drive. They’d like to start with Pittsburgh, but they just might not have the firepower to get it done.
