NFL QB Breakdown: Eckel examines the NFC South where the battles will rage between Brady, Brees, Bridgewater and Ryan

The Saints still look like the favorites, but Brady will have weapons with the Bucs.

There has never been a NFL offseason quite like this one when it comes to quarterbacks. One of the greatest of all time switched teams, another sure Hall of Famer stayed put, while one Super Bowl MVP was traded, another was released and yet another who has gotten to a Super Bowl could be traded or released. A No. 1 overall pick will also be moved and a No. 2 overall pick already has moved. Here is a division by division look at the situation for the most important position in the game.)

Today: NFC South

Atlanta Falcons: Matt Ryan is the starter and hasn’t he had an interesting career. His numbers in a vacuum say he’s been great. But his performances in big games outside of a dome leave much to be desired. Matt Schaub, who began his career as Mike Vick’s backup in Atlanta, is Ryan’s backup.

Carolina Panthers: The Panthers, under new head coach Matt Ruhle, signed Teddy Bridgwater to be their starter, thus ending Cam Newton’s tenure here. Then they traded backup Kyle Allen to the Redskins. The bigger question here is can the Panthers trade Newton and to whom?

New Orleans Saints: Drew Brees pondered retirement and then decided to come back to The Big Easy on a two-year deal. Teddy Bridgewater then left as a free agent, but the team made sure restricted free agent Taysom Hill wasn’t going anywhere with a first-round tender to be the backup.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Even if you’re in quarantine you might have heard the Bucs signed a man named Brady who’s been busy winning more than a few Super Bowls. Can a 43-year-old QB still get it done? Tampa Bay is betting around $30 million a year that he can. Right now Ryan Griffin is the backup, but Blaine Gabbert could return in that role. Jameis Winston will not.
