UNC kicks its football season off early with its first game tomorrow, Thursday, the 28th, at 8:00 PM ET. They are starting their season off strong against the Minnesota Golden Gophers in Minnesota. UNC hopes to repeat its success from last year tomorrow night. The Tar Heels demolished the Gophers 31 to 13 in an absolute blowout. Despite the complete bulldozering the previous year, this game has some teeth. With the Tar Heels entering Gopher territory, there is no such thing as an easy road game.

UNC Tar Heels Outlook

We’ll see if this UNC roster can find the same success following the departure of QB phenom and now New England Patriot Drake Maye. With his replacement still up in the air mere hours before the game, the quarterback situation appears to be a game-to-game decision by Chip Lindsey. With the Texas A&M transfer, Max Johnson and sophomore Conner Harrell are battling for the position. Lindsey has expressed interest in using both throughout the year to utilize their different skill sets. That being said, Max Johnson will likely be the first signal-caller to see the field tomorrow.

Injuries throughout his career have plagued the fifth-year senior, but he hopes this fresh start can be the change he needs. Max started his career at LSU as a three-star recruit out of Georgia before moving to SEC rival Texas A&M, where he played two seasons. The 6-5 quarterback aims to fill the void left by Mayes' departure. However, he could fall into place with a similar play style for this roster. Conner Harrell has become a considerable challenger.

With a more mobile game, Harrell played just four games for the Tar Heels last year as a freshman. Putting up some modest stats behind Mayes, he offers coach Lindsey a change in pace and style. If one thing is clear, this team will look very different from last year. You can never truly replace a talent like Mayes, certainly in only a year. Mayes sent multiple school records and looks to be an impactful player in his NFL career. Whichever way this roster battle goes, Minnesota will be there to face them.

The Golden Gophers Outlook

Coming off a middle-of-the-road season last year, finishing 6-7, they look to start on the right foot this year. With a winning 4-3 record at home last year, the Gophers are not a pushover at home. Starting behind their new QB, Max Bronsmer, a transfer from New Hampshire. He sealed the starting spot back in spring training. Following an impressive 3500-yard, 29 TD season, Brosmer makes this Gophers team dangerous. With a strong arm, Brosmer gets all his work done through the air. However, this could affect the game as tomorrow is expected to be a rainy, humid day with 10mph+ winds. We’ll see how the veteran QB handles himself during his first appearance as a Gopher.

Regardless of the weather, this game should be close, with both sides walking our fresh rosters and new faces in multiple positions. Even though it’s just game one this a game, both teams want to walk away with a victory. The Gophers face a slate of strong competitors later in the season, with newcomers like USC and UCLA on the docket. Starting with a strong opener can go a long way to setting up the rest of the season.
