Neither team wanted to be playing this early in the bowl season. After winning in Austin in early November, the Mountaineers had an outside chance at making the playoff, but they ended the regular season cold, with losses against Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. Then QB Will Grier opted not to play in this bowl game with the NFL Draft on the horizon. The Mountaineers are expected to use two quarterbacks in this game to replace Grier and you know how that saying goes: If you’re playing two quarterbacks, you probably don’t have any. Considering that WR Gary Jennings and OT Yodny Cajuste are not playing as well, we don’t think West Virginia can keep up with a Syracuse offense averaging over 82 plays per game.
