North Carolina Tar Heels at North Carolina State Wolfpack, 2 pm Eastern
The Pick: North Carolina -178, bet $44.50 to win $25; North Carolina -4 (-110), bet $16.50 to win $15
The Tar Heels need this game. Joe Lunardi’s “Bracketology” has North Carolina as the last team to get a bye (meaning they wouldn’t have to play on the first Tuesday), so any more slippage would be catastrophic for their tournament hopes. This is also a rivalry game, so while N.C. State will be up, UNC should be as well. North Carolina is 41st in the Pomeroy Rankings, while N.C. State is 129th. The Wolfpack have not been good this year. In other words, North Carolina should win this game, should want to win this game, has to win this game, and if that isn’t enough for them to put forth their best effort, I mean, maybe people need to wonder if Hubert Davis is the right guy to take things forward. I know that sounds dramatic, but if there’s any game where the Tar Heels should show their talent, it’s this one. I think they will.
Virginia Tech Hokies at Miami Hurricanes, 3 pm Eastern
The Pick: Miami -115, bet $28.75 to win $25
Here’s another team fighting for their tournament lives. Lunardi projects Miami as a #9 seed, on the way up, but a loss here at home to a Virginia Tech squad that’s higher in the Pomeroy but is currently left out of “Bracketology,” would be a disaster for the Hurricanes. The Hokies have won three straight on the road, but Miami is 10-4 at home and Virginia Tech is 1-3 in one-possession games, so a close tilt today favors the home team who can handle things late. The Hurricanes are also 13-5 as a favorite, and they beat a real solid Wake Forest team two weeks ago, so I think they’ll be out to show the Tournament Committee a nine-seed is too low for them.
Louisville Cardinals at Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 7 pm Eastern
The Pick: Wake Forest -420, bet $25 to win $6; Wake Forest -8.5 (-110), bet $16.48 to win $15
Speaking of those Wake Forest Demon Deacons, they need to show the committee they’re better than advertised too, and they’ve lost three of their last four, including a disappointing one to Clemson on Wednesday. They are going to want to right the ship against a Louisville squad with nothing to play for who happened to beat that same Clemson team on Feb. 19. Despite their latest run of bad games, I continue to think Wake is a solid team who will make noise in March. But they need to make noise now too. They’re at home (14-2), and the favorite (18-2 overall and 10-6 against the spread). Weekend games in late February stick in the committee’s mind, so the Demon Deacons will want to make an impression.
The Pick: Parlay North Carolina -4 w/Wake Forest ML, +138, bet $15 to win $20.71
The Pick: Parlay North Carolina w/Miami w/Wake Forest +250, bet $15 to win $37.52
