Miami Hurricanes at Virginia Tech Hokies, 7 pm Eastern

The Pick: Miami +5 (-110), bet $22 to win $20

I continue to feel that people are underestimating Miami. Their overall record is 14-5, they’ve won 10 of their last 12 games, and those two losses were each by one point to the same team, Florida State. That last loss to FSU, the Hurricanes were down by over twenty and fought back to almost win it. They play hard and for forty minutes. Incidentally, they’re 4-2 as an underdog. Virginia Tech are ranked slightly ahead of the Hurricanes in Pomeroy (#42 vs. #64) and in those rankings are pretty evenly matched. The Hokies, however, have lost five of seven games (1-6 against the spread). I get that this game is in Blacksburg, but I honestly don’t understand why Miami isn’t ranked at this point. Virginia Tech plays the sixth-slowest tempo in the country, which will keep the score low, and thus the game closer. I’m taking the points.

Boston College Golden Eagles at North Carolina Tar Heels, 7 pm Eastern

Florida State Seminoles at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 9 pm Eastern

The Pick: Moneyline Parlay - North Carolina w/Florida State, true price -181, bet $36.03 to win $20

I’ll pair North Carolina, who faces an 8-10 Boston College team at home, with Florida State, who faces an 8-10 Georgia Tech team on the road. The Tar Heels should have little trouble with the Eagles, who are 3-7 in their last 10 games and 1-5 on the road overall. North Carolina is 12-2 as a favorite, and I continue to believe they’re going to make noise in March. Florida State, 8-2 in its last ten, travels to Atlanta to face a Georgia Tech team that’s 3-7 in their last 10, and 1-7 as an underdog. The Seminoles adjusted defense is 51st in the country, while the Yellow Jackets’ adjusted offense is 211th. Florida State is way too athletic for Tech. Pairing the Tar Heels with the Seminoles gives me a reasonable value (not great, reasonable), but I’ll risk it to make up some ground with two favorites.
