Why You Should Bet the Over on the Phoenix Suns Season Win Total

Phoenix Suns Poised for a Standout Season with Key Additions

Mitchell LeBrun

As the NBA inches closer, time is running out to place your future bets. One of the best lines out there is the Phoenix Suns Season Win Total line. Currently, the line is sitting at 47.5 wins, which sounds like a lot because it is. However, the Suns are completely capable of hitting those numbers. Let me break it down.

Key Off-Season Additions

The Suns had a quiet but productive off-season. While other teams like the Knicks were out making massive, flashy trades, the Suns kept it small. Well, they didn’t have a choice. They traded everything that wasn’t bolted down to get KD in the first place. However, the roster is stacked. With two elite blue chippers in KD and Devin Booker, offense was never an issue for the Suns, but defense was a completely different story. Lucky for Phoenix, one of the best defenders in the NBA draft fell to them.

Ryan Dunn, who played at Virginia last year, dropped right into their lap as the 28th pick in the draft. Standing at 6’7 with a 7’1 wing span, Dunn has the size to be a stalwart defender in the league. He showed his elite defensive talent at Virginia last year, averaging 3.6 stocks (steals and blocks combined). He was one of the best overall defenders in college basketball and looked promising as an NBA prospect. His most significant limiting factor was his offense. Only scoring 8 points a game was a genuine concern for teams during the pre-draft process. However, that’s not much of a problem for Phoenix, with so many dominant scoring options already on the roster.

Moreover, Dunn’s ability to join the team and provide an immediate boost to the defensive end of the floor could be tremendous! That’s not to say he can’t help on the offensive end, too. Dunn has already made more three in his first few preseason games than his entire season at Virginia last year. This means that Dunn’s lack of shooting may have been due to the college system he was playing in. Phoenix may have landed the steal of the draft if he can keep these numbers up

Even beyond a great draft pick, the more critical addition came in free agency for the Suns. Landing Tyus Jones for a minimum contract was shocking for a player of his caliber. As one of the best passers in the league, Jones brings an elite playmaking skillset to this team. They needed it last year too, with KD, Booker, and Bradley Beal doing most of the playmaking. Now Phoenix has one of the most efficient passers in the league, opening up the floor for the rest of the team. Jones's impact alone might be enough to get this roster over the 48-win mark.

Adding Mike Budenholzer as Head Coach

The Suns didn’t just make roster improvements. They made coaching improvements as well. Moving on from Monty Williams to Mike Budenholzer could bring some new life into this roster. As a championship-level coach, Coach Bud has the skill set to maximize this roster. During his time in Milwaukee, he only had one season under 47 wins. Even though he did have Giannis at an MVP level, this roster might still be more talented. If there is one thing that coach Bud is great at, it’s winning regular season games in heaps.

Beyond the addition of coach Bud and the new players, the biggest reason to believe in this team is their history. Look at last season; the team was still figuring it out, had less talent, and dealt with several injuries throughout the year. They won 49 games; we think the total could hit 50 this year. Though, it won’t be easy. The Western Conference is undoubtedly better than it was last year. Regardless, we think the Sun will still be one of the premier teams in the West this year.
